The sun's over the yardarm, isn't it?

Is there some pill that I can take which will enable me to decipher IK patterns?

Turn heel: (yeah, yeah)
Row 1: Sl 1, p 16, p2tog, p1, turn (check)
Row 2: Sl 1, k5, ssk, k1, turn (check check)
Row 3: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn (your average helper monkey could do this)

Cont in this manner, working 1 more st before dec each row until all of the sts have been worked - 18 sts rem.

WTF? Continue in what manner? Am I supposed to start again at Row 1 and p17, then go to Row 2 and k6, etc? After Row 3 above, the next row should be knit, not purled. I don't understand.

This has annoyed me so much that I've thrown it to the floor and started the second half of Backyard Leaves. Jeez, it's a relief to be working with sproingy yarn, big needles and a pattern I understand. It's Miller Tanqueray time.

I believe "this manner" refers only to rows 2 and 3. So, Row 4 would be: s1, k7, ssk, k1, turn. Row 5 would be: s1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn. Do it, see how it works out, get back to me if it starts looking like a helper monkey. You know there are patterns out there for helper monkeys, don't you?

I agree with the grumpy one.

Save me some gin :-).

Yay, that makes sense! Thanks! Why can't the pattern just *say* that? Why does it have to be cryptic? Why does the Man want to keep me down?

I really do need to knit me a helper monkey.

And don't worry, there's ALWAYS gin in my freezer.

I got caught on those some directions. I also almost posted about it. It wasn't until I wrote it out that I "got" it.

Oh, good. I'm glad it wasn't just me! Interestingly, I ran around (figuratively) the house yesterday looking at every sock pattern in every book I have, and there were a bunch of patterns with instructions like that. They all explained it out a little better, though.
