reality sets back in
After a delightful morning, I went to work and wound up having a really long day. It was Lauren's last day, so I was a bit blue. And hot. Dang, it was hot today. It was so hot I didn't even want to knit.
But I did knit. I dashed off to work this morning helter-skelter without my coffee cup or my knitting bag, so I had no choice but to go to Starbucks (twice) and find something new to knit. Artyarns' Silk Ribbon has been singing its siren song to me for ages, and I finally succumbed today and bought a skein. DAMN, it's nice. It feels great wound in the skein, but unwound and loose, it was total sensory overload for my fingers. I almost needed a cigarette after winding it. (We had to wind it by hand, because I couldn't get it onto the swift before it got all tangled up.) ANYWAY, it knits up beautifully. Some ribbon yarn looks kind of sloppy and twisty, but this lays sleek and flat in stockinette. And, oh, the sheen. It just glows in the sun. My one complaint about it is that it snags if you breathe on it heavily, which I did. Did I mention that it's beautiful? It is.
We were open late tonight, so I didn't get to the theatre until the first intermission. I sort of drifted around (listlessly) during the second act, then spent the third act backstage chatting with Mr. Bob and eating candy.
This is sort of a pointless post, so I'm going to bed now.

Berocco's newish suede is the only ribbon yarn I've used, and it looked heavenly if tightly knit but like a goofy fishing net if loosely knit (which is my tendency, so I had to go down 2-3 needle sizes when I used it). With that yarn, the twistiness almost works FOR the suede look, though, since the variation in tones from front to back of the suede-look ribbon gives it a sort of brushed suede look (if that makes any sense).
Interesting to hear another's perspective on another ribbon yarn, though. Not a pointless post! I'm a relatively inexperienced knitter and enjoy hearing the ins/outs of specific yarns so I don't waste my money on bad purchases. So ... thanks! As yummy as your yarn sounds, I probably would steer clear of it. If anyone could snag a delicate yarn or fabric, I could.
I'm a relatively new reader of yours (and I *adore* the quirky tightly cropped photo of you with a semi-finished hat on your head, by the way). I get a grin every time I see it -- it would make a great Cafe Press T-shirt by the way. *ahem*
I've been wondering: Where does the "Snake Surly" name come from? It's a cool moniker. I just wondered. ;o) The phrase always makes me think of how I feel when I'm PMS-ing, sort of like there's a thought bubble over my head, saying, "Ooh, I may look like I'm nice but you just don't know how hard I could bite you."
ANYWAY! -- Enjoyed reading ya today, as always; you have a spiffy blog.

Hey don't feel bad about going to Starbucks twice, I've been to the bakery/coffee shop 3 times today and it's only 1:00!

Yeah, the Silk Ribbon should come with a warning: Get a manicure first.
"Snake Surly" - Aha, I was wondering if anybody would ever ask that. Somehow Rob and I (and my sister Abbie) got started saying "like a snake" about certain things. We'd say "slippery like a snake" or "fast like a snake" or "smart like a snake", then eventually we started dropping the "like a", and "snake" just became a synonym for "very". As in "snake smart" or "snake hot" (very common around here) or "snake sleepy" or "snake surly", which I am very frequently.
