oh, yeah

Happy second blogaversary to me! I haven't been a very good blogger this year, I'm afraid. I'd write more now, but I have to dash. We're off to Memphis. See y'all in the deep south!

p.s. Socks love to hang out with musicians.

Foul Blows the Wind

Is it time for sleep yet? I've had a crazy busy week.

No, really. I knitted like a maniac. Here's a picture of the knitting watching a bunch of lawyers doing their lawyer-y thing.

these are the people in my neighborhood

It's quite the shocker going from bland, suburban Fremont to the middle of downtown Oakland. It's not exactly the hood here, but it's not Piedmont, either.

I've been here long enough so that there are some familiar faces.

First is Crazy Hair Lady. She has terrible fashion sense, and she wears three non-matching wigs on her head. At the same time. I swear one of these days I'm going to sit on the corner (not disturbing the drug dealers, of course) with a camera and get a picture of her. It's really quite something.

There's the little old Asian couple next door who are always outside washing the sidewalk. It sort of drives me nuts. He's nice, she's a little crabby. Today as I was walking down the street to move my car, I saw her sitting in her living room window, plucking her eyebrows.

No neighborhood is complete without drug dealers. My guy (I don't need to buy drugs, I just get contact highs from the dope smokers next door) wears the same ugly black and red leather outfit every day, and has a crazy spiky hairdo. I saw him near the BART station the other day. I waved, but he didn't recognize me.

And then there's my favorite - the crabby Asian lady at the cleaner's. The first time I went there to get Nathan's shirts laundered, I asked for light starch. No problem. The next time I went in, Her Royal Crabbiness was there.

Me: Oh, I'd like light starch, please.
HRC: Medium starch.
Me: No, light starch is fine.
HRC: You want medium or heavy starch.
Me: No, I'd like light starch, please.
HRC: NO light starch. Medium or heavy! (she is yelling now)
Me: How about medium starch?
HRC: Great! You pick up Thursday!

I love Oakland.

Good Morning, Oakland

Due to Faire activity and such, we haven't been home on the weekends much lately. Therefore, it's an extra treat to get to sleep in and not have to be anywhere (rehearsal) until eleven.

Yesterday, Nathan made me the best Hangtown Fry he's made yet. We're trying to come up with the ultimate recipe. This one had a definite advantage over its predecessors, as the oysters were fresh Small Sweetwaters from Hog Island. DAMNATION. SO good.

This morning was another stellar breakfast - Nathan made fresh peach puree for bellinis, and I made Marion Cunningham's yeasted waffles. Margaret knows of which I speak, nyah! With them we had some absolutely fantastic breakfast sausages from Berkeley Bowl. This meal was accompanied by the very, very loud (yet strangely charming and addictive "It's like we have our own little place in Cabo") Mariachi music that the neighbors like to play. Now we are rolling around in a waffley coma, trying to dredge up the will to go to rehearsal.

ZZzzzz.

Christmas time is here, by golly

So there's this crazy rumor going around that Fair is going to be extended until December 23rd this year. One the one hand, I'm way excited. I remember last year I would have killed to spend one more day with my peeps, but I was grateful to have one free weekend in December to, you know, like shop and stuff.

On the other hand...OY. I have to start my knitting NOW. Baby Jeebus willing, here's what my mom is getting. To ward off scoffing, I'll tell you what it is when it's done.

swoon

For dinner tonight I'm making lamb shanks stewed in wine, onions and anchovy-stuffed olives.

THE HOUSE SMELLS SO GOOD. I think I need a sedative.
