Oscar Challenge: 1940
Call me crazy, but I'm going to have to disagree with the Academy on this one. Not that I don't like Rebecca. Heck, it's not that I don't love Rebecca. What's not to love? Dreamy, dreamy Lawrence Olivier, fabulous story, genius Hitchcock. It's one of my all-time favorite movies, but nothing can beat The Philadelphia Story.
The Philadelphia Story is PERFECT. It's magic. If I had to go to a desert island with one movie, this would be it. Seriously, what's not to love? Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart fit together like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. It's witty and romantic and clever and it was ROBBED. It totally should have been Best Picture.

I have to agree with you. Both films are amazing, but The Philadelphia Story, is virtually perfect. Like It Happened One Night, it both defines and transcends the romantic comedy genre. Besides, I don't think that there's a more thrilling kiss in all of cinema than when Jimmy Stewart kisses Katherine Hepburn and her only response is a breathless "golly." It makes me tingle just thinking about it.

I mean this in the best possible way, but I HATE YOU because I have a metric shitload of things to do but now I'm going to have to go rent The Philadelphia Story and mess my schedule all up because, film heathen that I am, I have never seen it. But I haven't seen Rebecca either (read the book. don't remember much) so I guess that makes me even. Or more heathen.
